Are you having problems with the final drive? Do you need advice? We are here to help you.

Below you will find some basic advice and tips to help you out of the deadlock.
When things go wrong.

External problems

If the final reduction is moving slowly or not moving at all, it may not be at fault. Even if the transmission or the engine is not working properly, this may be the sign of a breakdown in another part of the machinery.
Here are some things you should consider:

  • Is there enough oil in the hydraulic oil tank?
  • Is the engine running at full speed?
  • Are the tracks too tight?
  • Is the machinery stuck in high-speed mode?
  • Are the tracks, rollers, idlers in good condition?
  • Does the machinery provide the correct oil pressure and flow required for the travel motor?
  • Are there internal leaks inside the pivot joints?
  • Is there a return pressure or blockage between the engine and the return line?

Advice: Do not use a repaired or a new final reduction unless you are sure you have found the cause of the initial breakdown or you have repaired the defect.

Problems with the final reduction

1. Sign: Oil leakage

Problem: Oil leakage at the final drive case

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 Deforming of the case or cover of the final drive caused by physical deterioration Replace the cover or the gasket to prevent leakage
2 Pressure accumulation in the final drive caused by the engine or external problems Contact the CTHparts service centre

 

Problema: Oil leaks behind the drive roll

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 Deterioration or wear (aging) of gasket Replace the gasket
2 Pressure accumulation in the final drive caused by the engine or external problems Contact the CTHparts service centre

 

 

2. Sign: The level of oil in the final drive is too high

Problema: The hydraulic oil is leaking from the engine in the final drive

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 The gasket or driving axle bearings are worn out Replace them accordingly
2 Excessive pressure in the engine closing External problem

 

 

3. Sign: Excessive noise

Problema: Insufficient oil in the final drive

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 Oil leakage from the final drive or lack of proper maintenance The final drive/engine requires check-up


Problema: Worn bearings or pinions

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 The final drive/engine has reached the end of its planned lifespan or has broken down prematurely because of a lack of proper maintenance Replace the final reduction with a new or reconditioned one from CTHparts

 

 

4. Sign: Excessive vibration

Problema: Loose sprocket

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 The sprocket bolts are loosened Tighten or replace the bolts


Problema: The final drive ”jerks” while spinning

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 The final drive/engine has reached the end of its planned lifespan or has broken down prematurely because of a lack of proper maintenance The gear box/engine requires check-up

 

 

5. Sign: Excessive heat

Problema: The final drive case is too hot to the touch or steam appears when wet

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 There is not enough oil Fill with oil
2 Bearings are worn out The final drive/engine requires check-up
3 The break is not releasing properly Check the brake actuation pressure and the brake piston lining
4 The hydraulic oil is too hot Check the oil cooler and the hydraulic system

 

 

6. Sign: The machinery does not go up steep surfaces or slopes or turns to one side

Problema: Lack of power

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 The hydraulic pressure is low Check the hydraulic pressure at the travel motor
2 High external friction Check the tension of the track chain and the condition of the rollers and the idler pulley
3 Travel motor is locked in fast mode Check the speed control system
4 Travel motor is extremely worn out Repair or replace the travel motor
5 The final drive is extremely worn out Repair or replace the final drive

 

 

7. Sign: The final reduction does not rotate

Problema: The engine is running, but the final drive does not rotate

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 The driving axle or the first central pinion are damaged Change the driving axle and the first central pinion (and couplings, if necessary)


Problema: Nothing is moving

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 The final drive/engine has reached the end of its planned lifespan or has broken down prematurely because of a lack of proper maintenance Contact the CTHparts service centre
2 The break is not releasing Check the external braking system
    Check the brake cylinder gaskets

 

 

8. Sign: The final reduction rotates freely

Problema: The brake is not working

  Possible Cause: Solution:
1 Residual pressure in the circuit Check the hydraulic system
2 Worn brake discs Change the discs
3 The driving axle is broken Change the driving axle
